About MMF

Mohsena Memorial Foundation (MMF) is a non-profit
organization based in Princeton, New Jersey. It is
registered in the State of New Jersey as a charitable
organization. It is also registered with the Internal
Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3). All donations
to the foundation are tax-exempt. The Foundation's main
activities are teaching, learning and publication.
THE INCEPTION OF THE FOUNDATION
Mohsena Begum, the daughter of the late Syed Zafar Abbas,
was born in Sultanpur, U.P., India. She was married to
Mr. Syed Zaheer Hasan Naqvi of Mustafabad, U.P. She had
an excellent education in Islamic sciences, although
private, as was the custom in the early part of this
century among Indian Muslims. After her children grew
up, she developed her skills in writing verse and public
speaking. She wrote devotional poetry and became a
successful Zakirah (lady-speaker who addressed religious
gatherings in the month of Muharram) in Lucknow, where
she lived until 1967. She moved to Karachi and was
accepted in the society of devotees of Imam Husayn
there, equally well. She died of a cardiac arrest while
preparing to recite a Majlis, on the 8th of Rabi the 1st
(2 April 1974). She was survived by her husband, three
sons and three daughters who established this foundation
to propagate and enhance the work of community and
religious services she began in her lifetime.
THE ACTIVITIES OF THE FOUNDATION
The Foundation works to bridge the gap between Muslim
communities living in the USA and to promote good
relations between Muslims and non-Muslims. For this
purpose, MMF published a monthly newsletter for a period
of ten years. One of the Foundation's projects is the
Islamic Outreach Program. Lectures and seminars are
arranged for schools, hospitals and churches. Literature
is sent out to authors and publishers who produce
anti-Islamic or insensitive literature. During the
period of 1987-2002, the Foundation ran a Sunday Islamic
school for children in the area of Princeton.
The Foundation has raised funds to have a new copy of
the Holy Qur’an printed with translation and commentary
to be placed in US public libraries.
The Foundation is working on bringing out more books on
various Islamic topics in the near future.
Independent Viewpoints is a new initiative of MMF, run
entirely by the younger generation of American Muslims
in our Foundation.
MMF is an NGO-member of the United Nations.
