Muslims, like other large groups, are varied in their backgrounds, ideologies, and opinions.  So why does it seem like they are so often characterized as one homogenous entity?  In fact, it is important to recognize all people as individuals and to act while realizing that our actions affect each other as humans first, and large entities later.  And its time we stood up and said so.  The fear of what could happen if we do needs to be replaced by a fear of what may not happen if we don’t speak up and represent ourselves.  Along with non-Muslims who empathize with the American Muslim experience, its time we took our living room conversations and Islamic Center discussions into the public sphere.

Independent Viewpoints is a non-profit organization concerned with empowering American Muslims and concerned citizens by giving them a voice.  And we're not talking about a single monotonous chant.  We're talking about using your voice to begin dialogue, building your forum by getting involved, and creating your vision to affect change.

For this first Independent Viewpoints event, we have confirmed Dr. Noam Chomsky as our keynote speaker. He will touch upon the importance of civic involvement and political action in the US. We also look forward to hearing his thoughts on Iraq and its future and on how American foreign policy can change to foster a desire for unity in Iraq. We are also working on inviting a panel of Muslim speakers, both Shia and Sunni, to talk about their views on the role of the American Muslim community in the US political system, our civic responsibilities, and how we can come together with our fellow Muslims and Americans to work for political change.
